This Old House Best New Home Product

Our Bamboo Subway Tile is available in a 3 inch by 6 inch size and is made from real Moso species Bamboo.  Our Bamboo tiles are available in four rich, contemporary colors and include the availability of necessary bamboo trim and decorative pieces.  Our bamboo subway tiles (patent pending) are Made in the USA and the tiles are truly a unique design choice for those who want a special look for their home or commercial project.

Our Bamboo subway tiles are suitable for interior walls, in dry areas only such as residential kitchen backsplashes or wainscoting for any room.  Commercial applications also have proven popular in restaurants and hospitality environments. Any location where moisture will not be present is a suitable application. Our bamboo tile products are made from real bamboo and because of this there will be naturally occurring variation from tile piece to tile piece and from box to box.  This variation is common in all natural products so customers that desire a more uniform look in their materials should select another product.

Bamboo is a product that is high on the wish list for many of our interior designer and architect clients due to the natural beauty and high quality of bamboo material.  Bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource that is recognized as a green material under the LEED Building certification.  The Bamboo we use to make our subway tiles is harvested sustainably at maturity between 5.5 to 6 years thus leaving behind a thriving plant and new shoots.  In addition, the Bamboo we use to make our tile qualifies for the SCS Indoor Advantage¬¨¬®¬¨¬Æ_¬¨¬ï Gold certification from Scientific Certification systems which guarantees that any products which are awarded certification contribute to a healthy and safe indoor environment.

    Some fun facts about Bamboo:

    • Bamboo is one of the strongest building materials in the world with a tensile strength comparable to steel
    • Bamboo can grow up to 47 inches in 24 hours and as much as 78 feet high in 40 - 50 days.  Compare this to the trees used to make hardwood floors which can take 30 - 50 years to re-grow and the cutting of these trees contributes mightily to the degrading of our forests
    • Bamboo plants absorb about five times the amount of carbon dioxide and produce up to 35% more oxygen than hardwood trees
    • Bamboo plants while growing are naturally moisture-resistant and anti-bacterial with excellent mildew resistance

Installation guide for Bamboo Subway Tiles

    Use
Bamboo Subway tiles are for interior walls located in dry areas only.  Our Bamboo tiles are well suited for areas such as Kitchen Backsplashes, Bathroom Wainscot and Bathroom Vanity Backsplashes. Do NOT install the Bamboo Subway tiles in exterior or wet areas such as swimming pools, shower stalls, saunas and steam rooms or fountains.

    Cook top clearance
Our tiles are made from real Bamboo and while the surface is treated, they still can be combustible if placed at an unsafe and unapproved distance to your cooktop.  Please refer to your appliance manufacturer or reference and follow your local building codes for recommended clearances.

    Acclimation and Storage
Upon receiving your order of Bamboo tiles there is an acclimation process to follow for this product.  The Bamboo tile box tops should be opened and allowed to sit and acclimate in the home or commercial location where they will be installed for 4 - 5 days before beginning the installation process.  Important note:  please be sure storage conditions match the optimum temperature conditions of the building when the building is normally occupied.

    Installation of Bamboo Subway Tiles

    Substrate
We recommend a solid substrate for installation of our Bamboo Subway tiles per ANSI specifications referenced by the Tile Council of America at www.tileusa.com

Solid substrates include cement or backerboard products such as Hardiebacker and Wonderboard.  When using a backerboard product be sure to tape all seams with backerboard mesh tape.

    Waterproofing and Crack Isolation
We strongly recommend that a waterproofing and crack isolation membrane be used to prep any surface.  This material is to be applied to the surface to be tiled prior to any mortar being used and tile installed.  Products that are both effective and easy to install and which are available nationwide include RedGard® by Custom Building Products which is available at most Home Depot locations.  Mapelastic AquaDefense by Mapei is available at most Lowes locations.  Schluter® - DITRA (www.schluter.com) is available at tile stores nationwide and also at many home improvement locations.

Shuffle tiles to accommodate naturally occurring variation
Before installing tiles on the wall it is best to remove tiles from their boxes and lay them out on the countertop or floor.  Because of the variation naturally found with our Bamboo tile products, we recommend to shuffle the pieces from box to box so your final installation will have a natural appearance and flow that you will be pleased with.

    Adhesive Recommendations
Our Bamboo tiles are designed for easy installation due to the type of backing used in the construction of all of the field tiles.  For Bamboo tile, trim, and decorative piece installation we recommend using a quality construction adhesive such as Liquid Nails to adhere the tiles to your substrate which is available at most home improvement centers and hardware stores nationwide.  Tile Mastic is a secondary option for installing our Bamboo tiles since this material is for DRY AREAS only and there is no moisture involved in using this pre-mixed product.  Commercial installers if preferred can use epoxy thinset and epoxy grout to install our Bamboo tiles as well as trim and decorative pieces.

    Making Cuts to Bamboo Tiles
Making cuts to the Bamboo tiles will result in an exposed portion of the wood which will necessitate the need for the cut area to be sealed and protected.  A touch up kit is available for purchase from AnchorBayTile and is required for use whenever there are cuts made to the Bamboo field tiles or trim pieces.  The touch up kit should be used to seal the cut edge of the Bamboo tiles and / or the Bamboo trim tiles and decorative trim pieces once these items have been cut and before they are installed on the wall.  A simple application to the cut edge is sufficient to protect the wood from any harm.  To make cuts to the Bamboo field tiles customers should use a blade designed to cut HardieBacker such as the Diablo blade made by www.freudtools.com and available at most Home Depot locations or blades for backerboard made by Hitachi or DeWalt and available at most Lowes locations.  For cuts required on the trim and decorative Bamboo pieces, a standard fine-tooth blade designed for cutting wood is recommended and these blades are readily available at your local home improvement store.  Each of these blades are designed for use on a standard table saw.

    Grout
A standard Non Sanded grout or epoxy grout (for commercial installers) should be used in ALL cases with the Bamboo Subway tiles.  Use a grout float to push grout firmly and securely in to grout joints.  Remove excess grout by holding grout float at a 90° angle to the face of the tile and working diagonally across the grout lines.  Clean excess grout by dampening a tile sponge (NOT WET) and gently wipe the excess grout from the Bamboo tiles by moving sponge diagonally across grout joints.
Do not introduce excess water to the grout or tiles.  Dampen the sponge (NOT WET) to clean the grout.  Be careful not to let any water sit on the surface of the tiles.  Use a clean, dry cloth working in a diagonal motion to the grout joints to remove any final grout residue.  We strongly recommend that you seal the grout after the grout dries.  Tilelab Grout and Tile Sealer or Aquamix grout sealers are excellent choices to seal the grout when grouting is complete.  Both products are available at many local home improvement locations.  Be sure to immediately wipe any excess grout sealer off of the Bamboo tiles when doing the sealing.

    Maintenance & Care
Our Bamboo Subway tiles should be cleaned as you would any wood flooring or decorative wood product.  Wiping with a dry cloth should be sufficient in most instances.  Should more extensive cleaning be required, we recommend using any mild, non-acidic, and non-abrasive cleaner, or mild soap and water.  Do NOT use any cleaning products containing Ammonia or any other similar abrasive or harsh chemical.  For additional protection as needed and to maintain tile luster, we recommend using Watco Satin Finishing wax or a similar product that can be found at most home improvement stores.  Should any small scratches or scrapes happen to the Bamboo, included with each touch up kit are wax crayon Fil Stiks in the color of your Bamboo that should be used to fill voids and make small scratch repairs.

Bamboo is a very durable and hard material that has been used for thousands of years in and around Asia as a means of making a wide range of everyday products.  To damage or harm Bamboo requires quite a bit of force against the material.  Bamboo is a naturally harvested material however and requires regular and proper cleaning and maintenance to enjoy the long life regularly enjoyed from Bamboo products.
